Joining the Grateful Oars Rowing Club

Most members of the Grateful Oars Rowing Club live within commuting distance from Norwood, in north central St. Lawrence County, New York.

Grateful Oars Rowing Club adult members join at two levels, full membership and alternate membership. Youths over 14 and under 18 may join for a reduced rate. Anyone who seeks to house a personal boat in the Oars boathouse joins at one or the other adult level. There is an additional fee for boat storage.

The Grateful Oars has a "try before you buy" policy of offering two free rows before a prospective member needs to pay dues and join the club.

Full members typically are assigned to one or more regular crews that row once per week. Although there is no limit to the number of crews one may row with on a regular basis, the need to accommodate all full members' minimum rows, boat availability, and members' personal schedules combine typically for a practical limit of one or two rows per week. Members of the racing crew may row more often when training for a regatta. At a minimum, full members are assured of one regularly scheduled rowing session per week.

Alternates form the core of the substitutes list, but are not assigned a regular row. Alternates may actually row often, as full members will miss a row now and then. The more flexible the alternate member's schedule, the more he or she will be able to row when called.

The cost of full membership is currently (2007) $100.00 per year. Alternates join for half that amount ($50). Those under 18 years of age join for $50, regular or alternate. The minimum age for membership is 14. The membership fee is good for one year, payable in the spring.
