Try Rowing with
the Grateful Oars
The Grateful Oars offers the prospective rower two free rowing sessions to see if
the sport is for you. Your best bet for trial rows is to start with our Learn
to Row Day, held in conjunction with US Rowing Association. Later, fill in on a
regular boat when a crew member just has to be somewhere else that day.
Your trial rows would be with a crew that is rowing at an appropriate
level of skill.
We need to know that you are interested in trying rowing.
To be placed on the list of prospective members or to schedule trial rows, call or email
Alicia Walter, 315-328-4008 or Denice Cline
, 315-265-7949.
Together with other US Rowing Association member clubs, The Grateful Oars Rowing Club each season holds a public "Come Row with Us"
day at Norwood Lake. This opportunity is
advertised in the community calendar features of St. Lawrence and Franklin
County media outlets. However, you do NOT have to wait for Learn to Row Day.
If you burn with desire to learn to row, and it's early in the season, by
all means call!
What to Bring to Your Rowing Session
- Sunglasses for glare
- Sunscreen on mid-day rows (typical rowing sessions last two hours)
- Sun hat
- Water bottle
- Willingness to listen and learn - no one gets it right off the bat!
- A sunny disposition
What to Wear, and Why
- Layers that can be removed easily from your seat as you warm up
- Tight-fitting top; shorts or pants with few or no seams in the rear
to avoid chafing against the wooden seat. Loose clothing may catch in the seat runners.
- Your thumbs may catch on loose clothing.
- Shoes that can get wet. With beginner crew members, we sometimes elect to launch from the beach.
Optional Things to Bring
- Gloves if you have sensitive skin. Weight training gloves work well.
- Rain gear - as needed. We will row in a light rain or mist.
- Swim suit - a post-row swim can be delicious on hot days!
- Dry clothes on shore: you may be splashed by waves or the oars hitting the water.
- Hand towel to dry your feet
